"Volunteers"

Written by Marty Blain and Paul Kantner it was released in 1969 on the album Volunteers by American psychedelic rock band, Jefferson Airplane. It is still considered one of the more controversial albums of all time, mostly relating to anti-war messages in the songs. It is rumored the original title of the album was supposed to be Volunteers of America, but pressure from RCA lead to the actual name.

Look whats happening out in the streets
Got a revolution got to revolution
Hey Im dancing down the streets
Got a revolution got to revolution
Aint it amazing all the people I meet
Got a revolution got to revolution
One generation got old
One generation got soul
This generation got no destination to hold
Pick up the cry
Hey now its time for you and me
Got a revolution got to revolution
Come on now were marching to the sea
Got a revolution got to revolution
Who will take it from you
We will and who are we
We are volunteers of america

This was the sixth album recorded by the group. Guests included Jerry Garcia (Greatful Dead) on pedal steel guitar, veteran session pianist Nicky Hopkins , future Airplane drummer Joey Covington on percussion and David Crosby and Stephen Stills (Csosby Stills Nash & Young).

Some people have criticized the album, stereotyping it as typical of the hippie philosophy with anti-war and pro-anarchism songs. But ironically, the title track was actually inspired by a " Volunteers of America" garbage truck that awoke Marty Balin one morning.

Jefferson Airplane 1965-1972, was an American rock band from San Francisco, a pioneer of the LSD-influenced psychedelic rock movement. Jefferson Airplane performed at the Berkeley Folk Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, and Altamont. They were on the cover of Life Magazine in 1968. The band co- headlined with the Doors in Europe in the summer of 1968. Many legendary bands opened for the Airplane: Grateful Dead, Santana, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Who, Janis Joplin, Steve Miller, and many others.

Various successor incarnations of the band have performed under different names, reflecting changing times and performer lineups, known as Jefferson Starship 1974-1984, and later simply Starship 1984-1989, before becoming Jefferson Starship The Next Generation in 1991.

Past  members, Signe Toly Anderson, Marty Balin, Grace Slick, Jack Casady, Joey Covington, Papa John Creach, Spencer Dryden, Bob Harvey, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Jerry Peloquin and Skip Spence.
