I started my Military career on 8 April 1953 when I joined the US Army Reserves and the 314th Military Police Battalion  in Canton, New York while I was still in high school.  I was promoted to PFC on 10 March 1954 and went on active duty on 7 May 1954.

Following basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey I was assigned to the PMGC at Fort Gordon Georgia where I received my Military Police training.

Immediately after MP school I was assigned to duty in Occupied Japan and was transported there by Navy ship.  We landed in Yokohama, Japan on 27 October 1954 and I was assigned to the 720th Military Police Battalion's Company "C" located at Camp Zama, Japan.

Camp Zama was Army Forces Far East, 8th Army Rear Headquarters.  General Maxwell D. Taylor had his offices there.  At that time we wore the 8th Army patch on our uniforms.

I worked patrol duty, gate duty, desk clerk duty and radio clerk duty while there.  I remember doing security and parking duty at General Taylor's home at the Segami Hara Housing area near Camp Zama.  We also performed traffic duty in front of General Taylor's office building.  We had a 55 gallon drum cut in half and painted white with red stripes that we stood on in the middle of the intersection.  At that time we wore summer kakhi uniforms with green neck scarfes and white hats.

We had what was called Sam Brown leather gear which consisted of 45 Cal pistol holster, handcuff holder, and night stick holder.  All was highly polished brown leather.  Brown boots with white laces were the foot gear of the times.

In March of 1955 when the 720th MP Battalion returned to the states we were all assigned to the 519th MP Battalion, and I was transferred to Tokyo, Japan, where on 27 May 1955  I reenlisted for six more years, they were going to send me back to the states.

When the 519th MP Battalion left for the US I was reassigned to the 289th MP Company in Camp Drake, Japan where I remained until I was rotated back to the US in November 1957.

I was assigned to the 716th MP Battalion at Fort Dix, New Jersey until 1959 when I transferred to the Adjutant General Corps and became a Personnel and Administrative Specialist.

I spent a tour of duty in South Korea with the 5th Cavalry of the 1st Cavalry Division from 1960 to July 1961.

I reenlisted for Camp Drum, New York and stayed there for three years, and then in late 1964 I was reassigned to the 3rd Armored Division in Frankfort, Germany. In 1966 I returned from Germany and was assigned to the US Army Transportation Officers Candidate School at Fort Eustis, Virginia.

On 15 August 1967 I was assigned to my first tour of duty in VietNam where I did numerous dutys.  I spent time in the 246th PSYOPS Company, and with Headquarters United States Army Republic of Vietnam and then finally settled in to Headquarters & Headquarters Company (H&HC), Saigon Support Command (SSC) as the Administrative Supervisor to the Commanding General.  While with SSC in 1968 the Tet Offensive took place.

I left Viet Nam in September 1968 with orders for Fort McArthur, California where I reported for duty as the Family Housing NCO. I stayed at Fort McArthur until December 1969 when I was again assigned for my second tour of duty in Viet Nam.

From February 1970 until September 1970 I was assigned to H&HC, 18th Engineer Brigade.  I went from there to H&HC 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Brigade, 101st Airborne Division where I was the PSNCO for the Battalion.

I left Viet Nam on 24 January 1971 and was assigned to the US Army Recruiting School at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana where I attended US Army Recruiting School and graduated as an Honor Student.  After school I was assigned as Station Chief of the Army Recruiting Station in Potsdam, NY about eleven miles from my home.

In May 1972 I was reassigned to H&HC Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. where I remained until my retirment on 31 December 1974 as an SFC E-7, 71Z50 MOS.
