Upon graduating from high school in Sitka, Alaska in 1968, I enlisted in the Army and signed up for Military Police training. I took my basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, and was sent to Fort Gordon, Georgia for Military Police training.

Upon completion of training at Fort Gordon, I was issued orders for Vietnam, after which I was processed through the Oakland Army Terminal in California.

I arrived in Vietnam January of 1969, and was assigned to A Company, 720th MP Battalion. I was assigned to routine highway patrol between Newport, outside of Saigon, and Long Binh. Usually a joint patrol with the local Vietnamese National Police.

I also performed routine patrol and Civic Action Patrol in the villages. We did occasional convoy escort up to Cu Chi, Dau Tang, and Tay Ninh. After my one year tour was up, I decided to stay for another six months.

When I returned I was transferred to B Company and assigned to the Can Tho Detachment in the Mekong Delta. There I was on routine night patrol in and around Can Tho, mostly security and joint patrol with the Popular Forces. I also worked the MP Desk quite often.

After returning from Vietnam in August of 1970, I received orders for the 56th MP Company at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, which is where I spent the remainder of my service.

I was honorably discharged from the Army in August 1971.

After returning to the United States, I took advantage of the GI Bill and went to college in Washington, and took up Marine Engineering.

After working on various large projects throughout the state of Alaska over the years, I decided to try commercial fishing. I bought a fishing boat and decided I liked that better.

I live in Sitka, Alaska, which is in southeast Alaska. I also have a fishing charter business on the side.

My experience in Vietnam was a growing up fast experience. I appreciate the fact, even today, that I was one of the lucky ones that was able to return and write of my experiences. Lots of guys were not.

I think about Vietnam quite often, and maybe I will return there someday.
