LTC Mary C. Frels (LTC Retired)

Commanding Officer ~ 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th MP Brigade
June 1996 to June 1998

LTC Frels assumed command of the Battalion in June 1996 from LTC Rodney L. Johnson.

     During her tour as battalion commander LTC Frels deployed with the Battalion in support of Operation Joint Endeavor, Joint Guard, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

     In June 1998 she passed command to LTC David D. Phillips

     LTC Frels had the distinction of being the first female commander of the battalion, and was a strong proponent for the opening of all MOS, including direct ground combat arms branches, to women. She issued this paper "Women Warriors: Oxymoron or Reality" while at the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks on 1 April 1999.
