LTC Furey was appointed Commander of the Battalion at its inception at Fort  George Meade, Maryland on 22 January 1942, during WWII.

        He participated in the selection and training of the first MP's in Maryland and Pennsylvania and accompanied them to Australia and New Guinea.

On 5 October 1942 LTC Furey relinquished command to LTC James L. Patterson when he was appointed Provost Marshal of Base Section 2 (Townsville), New Guinea.
