LTC Gibbons received command of the Battalion from LTC Charles A. Hammaker and served as Battalion Commander from May 1972 to 13 August 1972 when the Battalion was deactivated in Vietnam and the colors sent home to Fort Hood, Texas.

During his tour as commander LTC Gibbons oversaw the Battalions final phase of the Vietnamization process and standown during which personnel and assets were reassigned to other US or Vietnamese units. The Battalion was deactivated in South Vietnam on 31 August 1972, and was reactivated at Fort Hood, Texas when the 518th MP Battalion was redesignated as the 720th with LTC Gibbons commanding.

In May 1974 LTC Gibbons passed command of the Battalion to LTC George Nipper.
