The MP Patrol assignments in any duty station were as varied as their often colorful names. Most of the names given were officially assigned by the local unit or higher headquarters. The names might be numerical, refer to the local location, the type of mission, or be the unit radio call sign.

In combat theaters the MP's often assigned unofficial nicknames to their varied patrols.The nicknames were often based on the area of operation or mission, others because they added some recognition and bravado to the excitement or boredom of the specific patrol routine.
