Photo A0092: On 1 May the Japanese university students lead by the radical Communist Marxist movement of the Japanese Trade Unions and Japanese Communist Party staged a massive unannounced demonstration against American’s in the center of Tokyo in front of the Imperial Palace Moat and the Daiichi Building that housed the office of the Supreme Commander Allied Powers. The demonstrators assaulted American’s and Japanese Police, stoned buildings used by allied military forces, turned over and burned vehicles while shouting "Yankee go home!" Standard orders to the 720th MP Battalion patrols were to avoid confrontation and stay out of sight during public demonstrations, and let the Japanese civil police handle the disturbance.
