Photo B0092:  Civil Rights marchers led by Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., Ralph J. Bunche, John Lewis and clergymen of various faiths left the Brown Chapel AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church (far right) in Selma early in the afternoon of 21 March 1965 with over 3,000 marchers. To remain in compliance with the court order that no more than 300 marchers were to occupy the roadways at any one time, most marchers returned to Selma after a short walk with the main group. During the march, 720th MP Battalion jeep patrols and Army ordnance teams checked the culverts and bridges for explosives while helicopters and fixed wing aircraft provided surveillance along the route.
