Van Dyke, the 3rd Signal Brigade (rear) commander, was elected to represent the Army's longest-serving Soldiers because at 44, he was one of the oldest in attendance. Austin, with the 411th MP Company, 720th MP Battalion, was the youngest. He was 17 at the time and turned 18 on June 20. The ceremony was held at the completion of the III Corps run.
