SP/4 Leon J. Shrum, age 21, from Bowling Green, KY is killed in action during the Tet Offensive in My Tho. While on a reconnassance patrol in the city of My Tho his patrol was ambushed. SP/4 Shrum was mortaly wounded while providing covering fire for another U.S. patrol who were pinned down by enemy fire.
For his bravery while under fire SP/4 Shrum was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal for valor, Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service and the Purple Heart Medal. In addition SP/4 Shrum also earned the National Defense Service Medal. Vietnam Service Medal with one Campaign Star, Vietnam Campaign Medl, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Ribbon with Palm (Unit Citation). SP/4 Shrum left behind a wife, and a new baby daughter that he had never seen.

On 31 January 1969, the one year anniversary of his death, the 1st Platoon, 188th MP Company, 92nd MP Battalion, Commanded by CPT Gary M. Freedman, dedicated a monument to SP/4 Shrum in My Tho. The monument consisting of a plaque on a cement pedestal, was erected where SP/4 Shrum died in the Tet ambush. |
