Rich was drafted into the on Army 21 March 1968 and processed at Fort Dix, NJ. He attended basic training at Fort Knox, KY during April and May 1968. Attended Military Police School at Fort Gordon, Georgia in June and July 1968.

        After MP School he was assigned to the 532 MP Company, Fort Dix, NJ as part of the AWOL Apprehension Unit from July 1968 to June 1969.

        From the 532nd he was sent to Vietnam and assigned to the 22nd Provost Marshal Detachment in Can Tho as the NCO, Traffic Accident & Vice, from July 1969 to March 1970 where he completed his two year enlistment.
