“It Got Pretty Hairy At Times”

We had various duties, some I'm sure I can't remember. Basically we were to patrol in and around DaNang city.

We also had to pull security on the camp interior, and perimeter. When we first got there, we worked 12 hour days, seven days a week. That got very old, very fast.

I can still remember sitting out on the perimeter in a jeep with a M60 mounted on it  from 7PM till 7AM scared shitless.

We frequently got rockets that were supposed to hit the air base at Marble Mountain.

Believe it or not, another scary thing  was a traffic accident involving any kind of U.S. personnel that caused injury to a Vietnamese, or God forbid death. More often than not, 3 or 4 ARVN's would hold the U.S. driver and occupants at gunpoint and demand money. It was our job to go and try to get those people out of there however best we could. It got pretty hairy at times. I can remember having the windshield shot out of the jeep as we hauled ass away with the person who was involved in the accident. I think it was called a 10-13 with confrontation. All our patrols were X-RAY units.
