2 January The 720th MP Battalion was "officially" assigned the responsibility of conducting the daily supply convoy escorts to Cu Chi and Tay Ninh the headquarters of the 25th Infantry Division located near the Cambodian border in III Corps.

20 February Tay Ninh C onvoy's in support of Operation JUNCTION CITY The 720th MP Battalion committed one Officer and twenty-four Enlisted Men in direct support of the 1st Infantry Division and two Officers and seventy-four Enlisted Men in direct support of the 25th Infantry Division in Operation Junction City during the period of 20 February to 23 April 1967.

     Members of 3rd Platoon, 4th Squad, B Company, on the Tay Nih Convoy took their Parrot "LT Polly" on the escort. Their joke was if a canary in a coal mine gave early warning of danger, then a parrot on a perch in a jeep could warn of an ambush.

12 May, 0950 hours At 9:50 AM, CPT Thomas Schooley, C Company, flying air cover for the Tay Ninh Convoy to Cu Chi arrived at this office and rendered the following report:

(1) Roadrunner convoy OIC reported to control element [CPT Schooley] that one round of small arms fire was received at approximately 0750 hours [7:50 AM], in the vicinity of Check Point D, Grid Coordinates [map location] XT675100 on Highway 1.

(2) Propaganda leaflets were also located along the side of the road and samples were picked up by MP personnel. There were no injuries and no vehicles were hit. Convoy scout elements could detect no activity along the sides of the highway and the convoy proceeded to Cu Chi without further incident. Debriefed by MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations, MAJ Carl C. Keese, Battalion XO advised.

 

1930 hours Drug Incident At 7:30 PM, LT McCurgy, 534th Transportation Company reported to this office in person and asked to talk with the three MP's who were in vehicle C-7 on the Tay Ninh Convoy.

     He stated that he had found a bag of what appeared to be 'dope' in the possession of one of his drivers upon returning to his unit from Tay Ninh and that the driver informed him he had made an attempt to give it to the MP's at Cu Chi as the Convoy was moving out from Cu Chi for Tay Ninh but they did not have time to take it.

     Contacted C Company and was advised that SP/4 Roger D. Bowman, SP/4 Charles P. Knowles, and PFC Reynolds were the persons in vehicle C-7. All three arrived at this office and verified the statement that as the convoy was moving out of Cu Chi one driver had a plastic bag and stated he had got it from a Vietnamese boy. Due to the convoy being on the move the MP's continued on to Tay Ninh where they advised LT Anderson by radio of the incident. LT McCurgy confiscated the package and has it in his possession.

 

2010 hours At 8:10 PM, this office was notified by 2LT Face, C Company, that the Tay Ninh Convoy returned to Long Binh Post. 2LT Face further reported that the convoy had been delayed twice.

(1) At an engineer construction site a traffic jam blocked the roadway and 1/2 hour was lost clearing the traffic.

(2) During the return trip some engineer and civilian trucks in the convoy received enemy sniper fire. One Vietnamese National Policeman and two Vietnamese civilians were wounded. The 25th Infantry Division and engineer personnel returned fire and the convoy continued. No 720th personnel were involved.

 
29 November, Vehicle Crash At 0745 hours [7:45AM], PFC Bard, US52939798, 572nd Transportation Company, 48th Transportation Group, APO 96491, struck a Lambretta carrying 7 passengers at Check Point [CP] #1. The passengers were taken to a civilian hospital before the arrival of 25th Infantry Division MPs. According to SP/4 Solomen, of the 25th MP Company, SP/4 Bard did not possess an Army operators license or ID card.
 
11 December, Vehicle Crash A 5 ton truck ran into 2 Lanbretta's injuring 4 Vietnamese civilians. A medical evacuation helicopter was summoned to transport the victims. The accident took place 2 kilometers north of Check Point #1. SFC Janss, 89th MP Group notified. The accident investigation is being conducted by the 25th Infantry Division MPs.
 

13 December, 1630 hours At 4:30 PM, SSG Clifford S. Morrison, C Company, NCOIC, with the Tay Ninh Convoy returned to Long Binh Post and reported the following incidents,

(1) One gun jeep broke down on the trip up and was towed back to C Company.

(2) On the return trip the 716th MP Battalion escorted the convoy on the wrong route past the 3rd Field Hospital. The SSG Morrison notified WACO [716th MP Battalion Headquarters radio call sign] who attempted to get the convoy back on the right route without success.
