"Dennis Raban, Rick Parker and I had not been at Lei Khe very long when Dennis was assigned the duty of patrolling the base camp. Lai Khe had been in a "stand-down" mode for some time meaning that many of the combat units and some of the engineer units had rotated out leaving a number of areas abandoned but most still had buildings and some equipment left behind. |

Dennis said that as he entered one of the abandoned areas, he noticed a deuce & 1/2 truck parked next to an empty building. The truck bore markings not familiar to him and he knew this was not an American truck. As he pulled up a man dressed in camouflage fatigues came out and started to get in the truck. Dennis gave the command to halt at which the soldier took a martial arts style of stance. Dennis said that without thinking he put the soldier in a wristlock, subdued him and took him to the MP station where it was discovered he was a Republic of Korea (ROC) soldier on a scavenging raid. The ROC headquarters located a few miles down Highway-13 was notified, and they sent a three ROC MP's to pick up the soldier. The Roc MP's were very harsh and rough with the soldier and the interpreter said this was a very bad day for this ROC trooper. They loaded him up and Dennis escorted them to the truck. Upon retrieval of the truck it was learned that on top of everything else Dennis had broken the troopers wrist ...... so much for the ROC's martial arts trainin." SGT Steven D. Patrick, C Company, 720th MP Battalion, 3 December 1969 to 8 February 1971. |
