The Phu Loi call sign was "Deputy Oscar,"and they ran the "Iron" Convoys on Highway #13. Iron was the designated name given to the convoy by the 1st Infantry Division. They also ran convoy escorts to and from La Khe and Di An. |
| Reflections I was in the Phu Loi Detachment, the NCOIC was SFC Max Berger, he was from Iowa. We ran the "Iron" convoys on Highway #13. The Phu Loi call sign was "Deputy Oscar." To my knowledge there were no 720th at Lai Khe at that time. We went there (Phu Loi) daily with convoys from Di An. The mortar and rocket attacks were the most fun. Even more fun was the run from Phu Loi to Di An at 0400 hours [4:00AM] before the roads were cleared by the "Dusters." The Provost Marshal at Phu Loi was 1LT John E. Hammar. I left there in January 1968 (thank God) just before the Tet New Years Communist Offensive. SP/4 Michael L. Heintz, 615th MP Company and C Company, 720th MP Battalion, 89th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, August 1966 to January 1968. |
