"This picture was taken in Vung Tau on or about December 19, 1966.  That is me standing outside the jeep, and I can't recall who that is riding the M-60. We were assigned to provide escort for the 9th Infantry Division.  They had just disembarked at Vung Tau and we provided escort for their troop convoy to the Mekong Delta.  We had only been in country for about two months, and already felt and acted like seasoned veterans.  The bright young faces of the 9th Infantry troops were filled with anxiety, enthusiasm, dread, fear, elation and sadness.  We already knew what they were going to face in the Mekong, and our fears became reality when we read about them taking on a lot of casualties in the Stars and Stripes shortly after we had escorted them there.  Those of us who provided the escorts were extremely saddened.  I, and some of the others, cried."
