Watson Squad Leader of Ambush Squad-76, B Company, 720th MP Battalion, 89th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade wades in a deep hand dug depression feeling around with his feet for hidden sampans and weapons. The depression was part of a Viet Cong bunker site used as a way station in a tree covered cove of a tributary stream that feeds the Buong River along the northeastern border of the 720th MP Battalion Tactical Area Of Responsibility in III Corps Tactical Zone, Bien Hoa Provence, Vietnam. On 22 November 1968 1LT Chavis lead a combined search team consisting of three squads of the battalion’s B Company ambush platoon that located the bunker through intelligence information obtained from a VC they captured several days before. The VC Lieutenant Nguyen Van Thi was using the bunker to facilitate surveillance and planning operations for the future 22 February 1969 Post Tet Holiday attack of Long Binh Post by the 3rd Battalion of the 274th VC Main Force Regiment, 5th NVA Division.
