Darrell worked as a gunner on a PBR with the River Patrol Unit and then as the Squad Leader of an Ambush Team.

        0n 2 January 1969 in a barracks on Long Binh Post he attempted to disarm a member of his ambush squad who was in the act of committing suicide with his M16.

        The squad member died from gunshot wounds, Darrell was severely wounded.

       Darrell recently retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs and resides in South Dakota.
