Cairns, North Queensland, is Australia's northern-most city. Before World War II, Cairns was a sleepy, sugar-growing center and fishing port.

     During the war with Japan, it became an important operational center for American and Australian ground air and naval forces then fighting in the southwest pacific early in the war.

     It lapsed back into rural catatonia once the tumult and the shouting of WWII died.
