Paupa Campaign
22 April SGT Frederick A. Burness, Jr., of B Company, was in charge of a detail escorting enemy prisoners of war from Townsville, Australia to Port Moresby, New Guinea by air when the Camilia, his aircraft, crashed into the Coral Sea near Port Mosby with 12 crew and passengers. There were no survivors, SGT Burness, was listed as Missing In Action, his body was never recovered. He became the first Battalion and B Company casualty.
