SPC Kurt W. Kern age 24, of McAllen, Texas died 27 December of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device in Paktia, Afghanistan. Killed in the same attack were SSG Noah M. Korte and PFC Justin M. Whitmire. |

Kurt joined the Army in September 2009 as military police and was deployed to Camp Humphries, South Korea, before being assigned to the 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas in September 2011. He deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in December 2011. On 20 January 2012 a Memorial Service for SSG Korte, SPC Kern, and PFC Whitmire was held at the Fort Hood Chapel. |
