Photo A0151 This granite statute was presented to the 720th Military Police Battalion by the soldiers of C Company, on Decoration Day (Memorial Day) 30 May 1947. It represented SGT Frederick A. Burness, Jr. of B Company the first Battalion casualty who was killed in action on 23 April 1943 and is still officially carried as missing in action. The statue was dedicated to the men of the Battalion who had lost their lives in World War II. At the time of the dedication it was placed in a memorial park at Camp Burness, Nakano, Tokyo, Japan. The sign shown in the photo erroneously identifies the Philippine Campaign as his place of casualty when in fact he was lost in the Coral Sea off the coast of Papua, (British) New Guinea. The inscription in the wreath of laurel states "In Memory of our comrades who fell in battle." The inscription beneath the wreath is... Company C, 1947, 720th MP Bn. The photograph was taken on the day of the dedication. Courtesy of the family of PFC Stephen Francis Lydon, Sr., (deceased) C Company, 720th MP Battalion, 8th U.S. Army, Nakano, Tokyo, Occupied Japan, 1946-1947. |
