July 1941 Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) General Douglas MacArthur commanding, was established at Manila, Philippine Islands. HQ USAFFE was evacuated during March 1942 under enemy pressure and reestablished in Australia. HQ USAFFE was reduced in April 1942 to a nominal staff and General Headquarters (GHQ), Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA) was established. February 1943 Headquarters, USAFFE was expanded to assume administrative functions for all U.S. Army forces in the Southwest Pacific. In June 1945 General Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces, Pacific (AFPAC) was activated to replace GHQ SWPA and absorbed the functions of HQ USAFFE. HQ USAFFE remained an active headquarters in name only due to statutory reasons. August 1945 HQ AFPAC was relocated to Tokyo, Japan. Under the enactment of the 1947 National Security Act, in January 1947 and redesignated GHQ AFPAC to GHQ Far East Command. As a result of the break out of war in Korea in August 1950 the Japan Logistical Command was established to meet administrative and occupational functions previously performed by Headquarters, Eight U.S. Army (EUSA). EUSA efforts were now directed to the conflict in Korea. April 1952 Headquarters, Far East Command moved from Hibiya, Tokyo to Ichigaya, Tokyo. HQ US Army Forces Far East (HQ USAFFE) relocated to Yokohama, Japan. October 1952 HQ USAFFE was redesignated as HQ, U.S. Army Forces, Far East (HQ AFFE), assumed the functions of Japan Logistical Command, and moved to Yokohama, Japan. Japan Logistical Command was disestablished. Then in November 1953 HQ AFFE moved from Yokohama to Camp Zama, Japan. November 1954 HQ AFFE was combined with HQ EUSA at Camp Zama and was redesignated HQ, U.S. Army Forces Far East and Eighth U.S. Army (HQ AFFE/8A), and in July 1955 The stationing of HQ AFFE/8A at Seoul, Korea was announced. The headquarters located at Cam Zama was redesignated HQ AFFE/8A (Rear). |
