Nah Trang, originally a French Colonial resort city know for its fishing industry is situated east of Highway QL-1 on the coast of Khan Hoa Province bordering the South China Sea, in II Corps Tactical Zone. It was a part of the large Cam Rahn Bay Port area harbor and logistics base. It housed logistical depots, U.S. and Allied, air and land facilities of all four service branches.

On September 21, 1961, the 5th SFG (A) was officially activated at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Just one year later, elements of the 5th SFG (A) began serving temporary tours of duty in the Republic of South Vietnam, with the full deployment of the group by February 1965.

One of the groups A Team's, A-502's mission was the defense of the 5th Special Forces Group Headquarters and the Nha Trang Air Installation. When it was determined that the defensive perimeter needed to include the greater Nha Trang City area, the responsibility for that assignment was given to Detachment A-502.

From its operational base at Nha Trang, the group deployed throughout the four military regions within South Vietnam. The group's operational detachments established and manned camps at 270 locations throughout South Vietnam, training and leading indigenous forces of the Civilian Irregular Defense Groups. Additionally, Soldiers from the group led units of indigenous forces conducting reconnaissance, and direct-action missions throughout Southeast Asia.

Team A-502 became the largest team in South Vietnam, and was given the responsibility for the internal security of this headquarters and the other buildings and compounds within the Na Trang area of operations. The team was at its greatest number in mid 1968 when it had approximately 56 men.

1965
According to PFC Larry Mandrell who worked the detachment in 1966, he believes the first handler teams [88th MP Company (K9)] were assigned in 1965. The information has yet to be verified.
1966

According to 2LT John Milligan it was the company's northern most detachment in 1966.

Personal Reflection “The 212th Detachment at Na Trang provided physical security at the 5th Special Forces Group North Headquarters, Logistical Support Command compound, to include their helicopter pad and ammunition depot for the local A-Teams. The A-Teams trained and worked with Army Of The Republic Of South Vietnam [ARVN], and local Mountain Tribesman.

I was stationed in Nah Trang in 1966-1967 with my K9 Satin. I think this detachment was there only 1965 through 1967, then after I left it was disbanded and sent to other sites.“   PFC Marry Mandrell. 212th MP Company, 1966-1967.
