I went through basic training at Fort Ord, CA in late 1966, MP school at Fort Gordon, GA in early 1967 and was assigned to an MP Company at Fort Richie, MD as a sentry dog handler until I got orders for Vietnam. I arrived in country in late 1967, with orders for the 9th MP Company but was assigned to the 615 MP Company where I filled sandbags until they learned I could type.
I was then attached TDY (Temporary Duty) to the 179 MP Detachment PMO, 95th MP Battalion. Following a short period of in service training in Saigon I became one of six enlised men (EM) responsible for conducting physical security surveys of Army installations in the III and IV Corps Tactical Zone. We worked in the old PMO building until the new one was build and then moved our office upstairs. We worked directly, without NCO supervision, for the Assistant Provost Marshal, lived in the old hooch on "Main Street" between the old PMO building and the new, and used the latrine, showers and took mess at the Engineering Company next door. We spend a lot of time in the field conducting security surveys and used our office to type the multiple copies of our reports. Needless to say, we were a somewhat independent group, and enjoyed a pretty good existence for EMs in Vietnam. Because of my secret security clearance that I was given while assigned to Fort Richie, I conducted security surveys of more sensitive installations such as the General Officer Quarters at Long Binh Post (USARV).
I departed Vietnam in late 1968, returned to school and began work as a civilian policeman in Southern California. SP/4 David K. Wheeler, 615th MP Company, 720th & 95th MP Battalions, 89th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, 1967-1968.
