212th MP Company, Personal Reflection  "In December I arrived in-country as a PFC when CPT A. C. Boyd was the CO. SP/4 George Popeson was the company clerk and on R&R. I remember the people at personnel at the 720th opened my file and figured I could type, so they sent me to the 212th because SP/4 Popeson only had 2 weeks left in country once he returned.

Of course when the First Sergeant [Dalton T. Nedd] learned I was not an Army trained company clerk, he had a fit and called Battalion. They told him he had to take what was given. And with my luck, about 3 months later an Army trained clerk named Scott Horvath showed up. Whoever was the operations clerk had just been promoted, so they shifted me to operations clerk.

Shortly thereafter we got a new Operations Sergeant. He was with the unit for about 3 weeks before he had a heart attack and had to be shipped home. So that's how I got the job of being operations clerk."  SGT Warren J. Wright, S3 Clerk, 212th MP Company (Sentry Dog), 720th MP Battalion, December 1969-February 1971.

Personal Reflection  "I spent Christmas 1969 on ambush duty with the 720th "B" Company "Bushwackers". I had only been in country a few weeks and was trying to adapt to the heat, humidity and physical challenge of ambush duty. I carried the M60 machinegun for my squad and vividly remember how heavy it seemed those first few weeks. I usually didn't know or even care what day of the week it was much less what the date was, but I knew when December 25th rolled around.

For whatever reason, the reality of being in Vietnam hit me for the first time that day. I suppose it was because I had not allowed myself to think of my wife or family until that point. Suddenly my 12 month tour of duty seemed like forever. For the first time, I prayed that God would protect me. When you are 19, half way around the world, in a war and stop to think about your life, you remember a lot of things. I remembered the many sacrifices my parents had made for me which I had never bothered to give thanks. I remembered my friends and my new wife of 6 months and how much I had to be thankful for. On that day, as my way of coping, I promised myself that each day I was in Vietnam, I would take time to remember a particular day, time, person or event in my life and try to remember all the details - the people, the colors, the conversations. This helped me cope.

SP/4 Parker

I remember the life time friends I had already made by Christmas day in my ambush unit. It was reassuring to know that we could all count on one another when everything hit the fan and our lives were threatened. Although not everyone in our unit returned alive, I'll never forget them. They will always be a part of me.

Although I don't remember exactly were we set-up ambush on Christmas night, I do remember being on watch early in the morning. It was a crystal clear night and the stars were brilliant. The rice field in front of me was so light in was eerie. I could make out the distinct shape of each tree in a tree line 300 to 400 yards in front of me. There was no noise of planes, helicopters, gunfire, mortar rounds, nothing - just silence. It made me realize that the world could experience this type of peace all the time if it weren't for mankind's greed, hatred and ignorance."  SP/4 William R. "Bill" Parker, B Company, 720th MP Battalion, 89th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, December 1969-June 1970.

Operation HOLLY USO Bob Hope Show

The Battalion provided security for the Bob Hope USO Show (Operation HOLLY) performed in the Curry Amphitheater on Long Binh Post by providing the Long Binh Post Reaction Force in standby alert status.

B Company and the first Platoon of D Troop, 3rd of the 17th Cavalry, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, were defensively deployed under operational control of Battalion in the Tactical Area Of Responsibility (TAOR) as part of the overall security operations for the USO Show.

Bob Hope arrived at the rear of the Curry Amphitheater in a military sedan under escort of elements the 89th MP Group. Appearing with Bob Hope were,

United States Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong: Armstrong became a Naval Aviator in 1949 and flew 78 combat missions in the Korean War. As spacecraft commander for Apollo XI the first manned lunar landing mission, Armstrong was the first man to walk on the Moon. "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

Connie Stevens: Her international reputation has made its mark in show business history, having performed for 4 U.S. Presidents at the White House and the Kennedy Center, and her dedication overseas for the U.S. Military in Vietnam and the Persian Gulf as one of Veterans Across America's all time favorites.

Romy Schneider: Austrian actress who found fame in Hollywood appearing in the movies, Good Neighbor Sam, a 1964 comedy with Jack Lemmon, and the 1965 movie What's New, Pussycat with Woody Allen.

Les Brown and His Band Of Renowned: Tireless bandleader Les Brown's career spans more than seventy years. Remembered best today for vocalist Doris Day and the song ''Sentimental Journey,'' as well as for his work with Bob Hope and his efforts to entertain American troops abroad, Les truly reflected the spirit of the golden age of American popular music.

Hector and Ted Pierro: Believed to be a juggling act, no background information was available.
