They Say,
our deaths are not ours,
they are yours,
they will mean what
you make of them.

They say,
we leave you our deaths,
give them some
meaning.

At approximately 0900 hours, SGT’s Donna R. Johnson age 29 of Raeford, Jeremy F. Hardison age 23 of Browns Sumit, and Thomas J. Butler IV age 25 of Leland, all of the 514th MP Company, ARNG North Carolina, had just exited their vehicle to conduct a joint Afghan-U.S. foot patrol in the market area of the city of Khost in eastern Afghanistan when a Taliban motorcycle driver detonated his suicide vest. The resulting explosion killed the three members of the company, wounded three others, killed an Afghan translator working with the American troops, four local police officers and six civilians. About 60 Afghan civilians were also injured.

Reflection I recall meeting SGT Johnson for the first time at Camp McGregor (Fort Bliss, TX) at our pre-mobilization training site in July of 2012. She demonstrated the true Army Values by helping a soldier that was "reaching out" for help during a trying time in his life. I met with the soldier and SGT Johnson at the Camp McGregor Chapel and we discussed how to care for this soldier. She was a true NCO leader that cared for her soldiers and she will be deeply missed. I pray for the other soldiers daily and that God will continue to cover them and their families. Donna will be missed! CH (CPT) Rex E Hipp 505th EN BN/ Zone 6 Chaplain Camp Arifjan, KU APO AE 09366
