Camp Radcliff was established in 1965 as a base for the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in a remote valley located at the base of Hon Cong Mountain in An Khe, (60 miles east of Pleiku) Binh Dinh Province, northeastern II Corps Tactical Zone, in the Central Highlands.

The camp was named after 1st Squadron, 9 Cavalry MAJ Donald Radcliff, the 1st Cavalry's first combat death, who was killed in action on 18 August 1965. The troopers of the 1st Cavalry were instructed to cut back foliage to ground level by hand giving the base its nickname of the "Golf Course."

Personal Reflections
"Our conditions were very primitive, we lived in tents, had no running water etc. We guarded the base camp of the 1st air cav. When the detachment was at full strength we had 20 dog & handler teams, but most of the time there were only 12 to 16. Our NCO's were SGT Sylvan Schrank and CPL John Walker, and we also had a vet-tech but I can't remember his name." SP/4 Michael C. Wright, 212th MP Company (Sentry Dog), 95th & 720th MP Battalions, 89th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, 1967-1968.
Personal Reflections
"I was on perimeter guard at the Camp Radcliff ammo dump one night when my K9 Smokey alerted. It wasn't the enemy but a big tiger, Smokey didn't bark, and the tiger turned and ran back into the brush. Needless to say, I was scared at the time." SP/4 Richard R. Maloney, 212th MP Company (Sentry Dog), 95th & 720th MP Battalions, 89th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, 1967-1968.
12 December The 212th MP Company detachments in I & II Corps Tactical Zones were eventually reassigned to other duties after being relieved by the arrival in-country of the 981st MP Company (Sentry Dog).
