Phan Rang is the capital of Ninh Thuan Provence, was located three miles inland from the South China Sea and thirty-five miles south of Cam Rahn Bay in Corps Tactical Zone II. The area is a semi arid drought environment interrupted with occasional periods of heavy torrential rains. |
During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army occupation forces operated from a 3.500 foot runway then located on the airbase on Highway QL-11, five miles north northwest of Phan Rang City. Later, the French used the same airstrip to fight the Viet Minh during the First Indochina War. |
Besides the airfields, during the war the Phan Rang area was home to numerous U.S. and Allied military infantry, logistical units, as well as civilian contractor units. U.S. Air Force Security Police with K9 teams provided security at the airbase. |
1967 |
It's believed the 212th MP Company, then headquartered at Pershing Field in Saigon, sent the first 2nd Platoon (Central) handler teams in early 1966 during the area buildup. |
In 1967 the 212th MP Company, Phan Rang Detachment was part of the 2nd Platoon, under the command of 2LT John Milligan. According to 1LT Milligan, the detachment was located near the Phan Rang City-outskirts with a logistics ammo unit depot that supported the 101st Airborne Division and the South Korean Marines operating in that area. |
December It's believed that the 212th MP Company detachment departed Phan Rang and was replaced by the newly arrived 981st MP Company (Sentry Dog), 16th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, who were assigned to I & II Corps Tactical Zones. |
