Long Thanh (North) was located in III Corps Tactical Zone, Long Thanh District, Bien Hoa Provence several miles south of the 3rd Brigade, 9th Infantry Division& Tahiland Royal Amy Volunteers Bearcat base camp on Highway QL-15. It was home to several U.S. Air Force, Army Helicopter and Transportation units.

A twelve member security platoon of the 165th Combat Aviation Group, 210th Combat Aviation Battalion, of the 1st Aviation Brigade performed guard and security duties at the base gates, headquarters building and fuel bladder depot.

The base supported a 5,000-foot asphalt runway. Located five kilometers south, near the village of Long Thanh was the smaller Long Thanh Air Force Base with a 1,800-foot long runway. Nearby was the Long Than MACV-SOG (Special Operations Group) training facility for ARVN Rangers.

The 212th Detachment handlers performed perimeter and flight line security duties at the airfield. They worked two shifts from dusk to dawn.

They shared security duties at the airbase with a Security Pathfinders Platoon of the 165th Combat Aviation Group, 210th Combat Aviation Battalion, of the 1st Aviation Brigade.

Military discipline law and order duties were also provided by roving patrols of the 720th MP Battalion Bearcat Detachment that regularly visited the base.

When the detachment was first formed in January there was no compound for them at Long Thanh (North) so the teams stayed at the 9th Infantry Division Bearcat base camp to the north until billets were constructed.

23 January With completion of the billets and kennels constructed by engineers from Bearcat with assistance of the detachment personnel, the approximately fifteen handlers and K9's moved into their new cantonment at Long Thanh (North).

Of the four billets, two were for the enlisted men, one for the noncommissioned officers and one was the officers tent. When off duty the MP’s worked on construction of quality of life projects for the new facilities.

Personal Reflections  "I was stationed at Long Thanh (North) 1970-1971, assigned to a Security Platoon of the 165th Combat Aviation Group, 210th Combat Aviation Battalion, of the 1st Aviation Brigade. Apparently whenever MP's needed to stay overnight at LTN, they slept in our hootches.

"We wore the 1st Aviation Brigade patch. Mainly we were assigned to work the main gate searching the Vietnamese day workers coming on base and we also checked the travel documents and vehicles papers of all the vehicles using the main gate & the gate leading to Bearcat, and the entrance to the command bunker.

We also guarded the aviation fuel bladder dump at night. I never kept a journal and didn't write many notes on the photos but I think there were maybe twelve of us in our platoon."   SP/4 Steve Postier, Security Platoon of the 165th Combat Aviation Group, 210th Combat Aviation Battalion, of the 1st Aviation Brigade, 1970-1971.

1971-1972

Personal Reflections  "As best I can remember there was maybe 10 teams at Long Thanh. Our NCOIC was a sergeant E-5 when I first arrived there and then after he rotated we were assigned a SFC named Teddy Smith.

Our duties were perimeter security and the flight line, can't remember how many posts we had, each team would patrol a few hundred yards of perimeter. We ran two shifts from dusk to dawn. We ate at one of the aviation unit mess halls, not bad chow.  I don't remember too many units that were there, mostly aviation outfits.

I do remember that there was an ASA (Army Security Agency) outfit that masqueraded as MP's and everybody called them XYZ because for some reason, I guess, that the ASA wasn't supposed to be in Viet Nam."  SP/4 Robin P. Baughman, 212th MP Company (Sentry Dog), 720th MP Battalion, 89th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, 1971-1972.

Editors Note: The following units of the Army Security Agency were stationed at Long Thanh (North) in 1970-197; 146th Radio Research Company (Aviation) nicknamed “The Snoopers” moved from Saigon to the airbase and picked up the support mission to Military Region II and III; Headquarters & Headquarters Detachment of the 224th Aviation Battalion (Radio Research) “Lonely Ringer” relocated from Saigon to the airbase.
