1970 ~ 2nd Brigade of the 25th moves to Bearcat |
As part of the United States Army Republic of South Vietnam (USARV) Vietnamization Program the 25th Infantry Division was being redeployed from the Tay Ninh/Cu Chi area to be part of the protective ring around Saigon. Their new Headquarters would be the Bear Cat Base Camp in Bien Hoa Province. Their forward command post was called Fire Suppost Base Colorado. |
24 February through 1 March elements of the 25th Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade Task Force II, located in Cu Chi, were moved via convoy and escorted by elements of C Company, 720th MP Battalion. SSG Archie E. Moss was the detachment Noncommissioned Officer In Charge. |
|
Each day five to six march units would make the trip from Cu Chi to Bear Cat. The majority of the transport involved artillery pieces and ammunition being towed behind Deuce-and-a-half trucks or carried on low boy trailers. The daily runs were very slow due to the constant rains and all the heavy equipment involved. The C Company Detachment assigned was comprised of five or six gun jeeps, three MP’s each, augmented by several artillery unit gun jeeps. |
The C Company MPs were left to their own resources when it came to quarters and meals during the night. Fortunately for the members of the escort detachment SSG Moss had previously aided an Australian unit with some machinegun mounts for their jeeps. These same Australians were from a unit based in Bear Cat. SSG Moss called on the members of the unit and the Australians located an empty barracks on the base and arranged for tthe MPs to stay there during the convoy escort operation. There were bunks but no bedding or mattresses so the MPs used their sleeping bags. Using the building also allowed them to safely store their weapons inside where they slept. For meals the MPs ate C Rations or at one of the local Mess Halls on the base. Each morning they would form up and proceed back to Cu Chi for the next days escorts. |
Even with the inclement weather working against them the operation was successfull with no incidents of enemy contact and no convoy accidents or injuries. |
