At the start of the month Battalion HQ Detachment, its organic letter companies and the 615th MP Company were headquartered subordinate to the 89th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, III Corps Tactical Zone, Bien Hoa Provence, Long Binh Post,  South Vietnam.

Operation MANHATTAN

     Not all the time in the operation was spent in search and destroy activities. The B Company MP's always found time to spend with the local village children, who were especially excited when the MP’s had treats to provide. They also loved to pose when the cameras came out.

Operation MANHATTAN

     0230 Hours, the night silence at the B Company Detachment in the Michelin Rubber Plantation, Dau Tieng base camp was disrupted by an early morning barrage of enemy mortar, rocket and small arms fire when Viet Cong elements were caught probing the camp perimeter.

     Several troopers of the 11th Armored Cavalry were wounded by shrapnel and evacuated by helicopter. At daylight, the Viet Cong bodies were recovered from the perimeter and buried before the day’s missions began.

10 May

Operation MANHATTAN

     With the major part of the activities in their Area of Operation winding down, the B Company detachment in the Michelin Rubber Plantation, Dau Tieng, received orders to break camp and prepare to stand down. While awaiting their orders to move out and return to Long Binh Post, they destroyed and burned all their trash, bunkers and other temporary structures leaving nothing behind for the enemy to utilize.

     MAJ Phan Ngoc Thuy, Commander, Army of the Republic of Vietnam, 3rd MP Battalion (Quan Canh) and Provost Marshal of III Corps Tactical Zone sent a setter of Appreciation to Battalion Headquarters thanking them for their Civic Action support.

     MAJ Thuy said, “On behalf of all the officers and men of the Office of the Provost Marshal and the 3rd MP Battalion, I wish to express to you my deepest appreciation for the many contributions that the 720th MP Battalion had made to our civic action efforts.”

     “Through your personal effort and assistance and those of the personnel of your unit, a water well was dug in the 3rd MP Battalion Dependents Camp which has permanently solved the water supply problem for all dependents of our battalion. Moreover, the visit and donation of gifts by your Battalion Sergeant Major to the widow of a deceased member of our unit was a great comfort to all members of the bereaved family.”

     “Again, I wish to thank you for your many efforts in our behalf. The fine cooperation demonstrated by the members of your battalion is an outstanding example of the close relationship enjoyed by our two countries.”

11 May

0100 hours, The daily log was opened by SP/4 Texas K. Parris [HQ Detachment]

0030 hours, 2LT McLendon, [615th MP Company] reported he checked the Bien Hoa patrols and MP desk and all was secure.

Xuan Loc Detachment  0045 hours, SGT Keith D. Allen, 615th MP Company, Bien Hoa Desk Sergeant, notified this office that PFC Herbert E. Weber and PFC George O. Gluch, Jr. of B Company, Xuan Loc Detachment were on patrol near the 3/43rd ARVN Artillery compound when a Claymore mine exploded. Their jeep was sprayed with mud, there were no injuries or damage to them or the vehicle. There was one ARVN killed and two wounded inside the compound. CPT Leon C. Matassarin, assistant battalion operations officer was notified.

Operation SHOTGUN  0046 hours, SP/5 Taylor of the 90th Replacement Battalion requested Operation SHOTGUN escorts from the 90th to Bien Hoa Air Base at 0200, 0300, and 0630 hours. SP/4 Richard L. Singleton, B Company Charge of Quarters was notified.

0050 hours, LTC Kenneth Weinstein, Battalion Commander, contacted this office in reference to the lights being out in the Battalion area. Checked with SGT Jackson, 91st MP Detachment, Post Stockade, revealed that one generator was out of order and could not be repaired until after 0800 hours (8:00 AM). CPT Riggs, SDO, notified. A portable generator was utilized for Battalion base radio net.

Tay Ninh Convoy 0430 hours, 2LT Lamonica and SGT John E. Washburn, C Company, departed for Tay Ninh Convoy escort with 9 gun jeeps and 27 MP's.

POW Hospital Guard 0530 hours, SP/4 Dolan, CQ, 89th MP Group was provided with the POW and MP Guard count. Total of 62 POW's, and 30 MP's.

0700 hours, SFC Donn S. Gilray of B Company, was relieved of the duties of SDNCO by SFC Clarence L. Broome of HQ & HQ Detachment.

0710 hours, SGT J. T. Cartee, B Company NCOIC of the Long Binh Post perimeter guard detail returned to this office and stated his tour of duty had been completed without any incidents. SGT Cartee debriefed by SFC Clarence L. Broome and MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations.

Operation SHOTGUN  0715 hours, SP/4 Randall E. Shover, B Company, advised this office that the 90th Replacement Battalion escort to Bien Hoa Air Base was completed without incident at 0540 hoursm this date.

POW Escort  0810 hours, SSG Gilchrest, II Field Forces Provost Marshal Office, advised this office to pick up POW Tran Van On on 12 May from the 199th Light Infantry Brigade Cage at Binh Chan and deliver him to the III Corps POW Cage.

0915 hours, SFC James C. Parrish of B Company Interior Guard, advised this office that he checked the hospital guards, Long Binh Post patrols, Long Binh Post MP Desk and Gate #2 [Main Gate], and all were in order.

POW Escort  1100 hours, SSG Gilchrest, IIFF PMO, advised this office to pick up 7 POW's, Nguyen Van Teo, Ho Van Ngoan, Tham Minh Hung, Tran Van Vinh, Pham Van Hoang, Tran Van Ngo, and Vo Van Chau, from the 25th Infantry Division Cage and deliver them to the III Corps Cage.

POW Escort  1300 hours, SP/4 Errol J. Reddick of A Company  POW Escort Guard  advised this office that he had picked up POW, Nguyen Van Lai from the 1st Infantry Division Cage, as per request on 10 May, and delivered him to the III Corps Enclosure without any incidents. Routes 316, 1-A and 1, were utilized. One gun jeep and 3 MP’s were utilized. The prisoner was delivered at 0935 hours.

POW Escort  1400 hours, SP/4 Errol J. Reddick, A Company advised this office that he picked up POW Nguyen Van Cu from the 50th Medical Company, and delivered him to the III Corps enclosure as per request on 9 May. Route 1A and 1, with 1 jeep and 3 MPs utilized. Prisoner was delivered at 1030 hours without incident.

Operation MANHATTAN
     The B Company Detachment in Dau Tieng received their departure orders and pulled out of the Michelin Rubber Plantation to proceed back to Long Binh Post.

1625 hours, MSG Nunn, Operations 89th MP Group, advised this office that the aircraft for convoy air cover for 12 May had been coordinated for 0615 hours from IIFF to Cu Chi and return.

1630 hours, SSG Cecil E. Clark of C Company assumed the duties as Battalion SDNCO, was briefed by SFC Clarence L. Broome and posted.

1715 hours, SSG Kenneth McClain of B Company, NCOIC of the support unit for the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment notified this office by radio that his unit departed Long Binh Post at 1345 hours, and was due at Cu Chi at 2045 hours this date. MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations and CPT Ronald J. Perry of B Company were notified.

POW Hospital Guard  1717 hours, SGT Charles Schaeffer of B Company, NCOIC of the Hospital Guard Detail advised this office that POW Lui Quong Van, was admitted to the 24th Evacuation Hospital Emergency Annex at 1400 hours from the 1st Infantry Division Cage. A guard was furnished. The POW count is at 62.

1805 hours, SFC James C. Parrish of B Company Interior Guard, advised this office that he had made a check on Long Binh Post patrols, MP desk, gates, and hospital grounds, and all were secure.

1810 hours, LT Lamonica, C Company, OIC, Tay Ninh Convoy escort returned to this office and rendered the following report on two accidents:

   (1) A jeep from B Troop 3/4 Cavalry, 25th Infantry Division struck a child on Highway-1, 8 miles north of Check Point #2A, causing minor injuries. Child transported to 25th Division Hospital by Trojan Stress-8 [radio call sign].

   (2) An Armored Personnel Carrier from B Troop 3/4 Cavalry, 25th Infantry Division struck a 10 ton truck from the 446th Transportation Company 100 meters south of Check Point #176, causing minor damage to the 10 ton truck consisting of a bent running board and cracked fuel tank.

Battalion Commo  1845 hours, SGT David E. Metzgar of B Company, Perimeter Guard NCOIC, notified this office by radio that they were having trouble with the telephone (Land Line) and needed a repairman. SSG Overcas of, Battalion Communications was notified and repairman dispatched.

1905 hours, CPT Weston, Battalion SDO, advised this office that he had inspected and posted the Group Guards at 1800 hours, and inspected and posted the perimeter guards at 1855 hours.

Bien Hoa Detachment 1910 hours, LT McLendon of the 615th MP Company advised this office that he had checked the Bien Hoa MP Station and patrols, and all was secure.

Operation SHOTGUN  2005 hours, PFC Borud, 90th Replacement Battalion, requested an Operation SHOTGUN escort from the 90th to Bien Hoa Air Base at 2115 hours this date, and at 0115 hours 12 May. SP/4 James R. Chupurdy CQ of B Company was notified.

2109 hours, PFC Borud, 90th Replacement Battalion called back and requested the Operation SHOTGUN escort request for 2115 hours be changed to 2230 hours. SP/4 James R. Chupurdy, B Company CQ notified.

2137 hours, 1LT Kenneth G. Ort of B Company advised that the support unit for the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment returned to the Battalion area. Debriefed by MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations Officer.

2140 hours, SGT Griffin of B Company reported on duty as NCOIC of the Hospital Guard detail. Briefed by SSG Cecil E. Clark, Battalion Staff Duty NCO.

2315 hours, SP/4 Wages the Battalion Water truck operator reported to this office that the truck had thrown a rod and was dead-lined [out of operation]. CPT Robert Folster, Battalion Logistics Officer notified.

2330 hours, SFC James C. Parris of, B Company Interior Guard advised this office that he checked the Long Binh Post MP Desk, patrols, gate and hospitals and all were secure.

2400 hours Daily Log Closed.
12 May

0100 hours, an undetermined size enemy force attacked the Bien Hoa Air Base with rockets and mortars. Approximately six fires were started and included one large petroleum tank. The amount of damage or extent of damage and number of casualties has not been determined. MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations Officer, MAJ Carl C. Keese Battalion XO, CPT Francis Krahe Operations 89th MP Group notified. Spot Report submitted to 89th Group by 179th MP Detachment.

0120 hours, PFC Borud, 90th Replacement Battalion requested 2 additional gun jeeps for the Operation SHOTGUN escort, at 0122 hours (1:22 AM) PFC Borud called back and canceled the request.

0135 hours, Timber Butter-22 [call sign], 90th Replacement Battalion Escort, contacted this office by radio from Bien Hoa Air Base [BHAB], requesting one additional Operation SHOTGUN vehicle with crew to assist in the escort from BHAB to the 90th Replacement Battalion. SGT J. T. Cartee, B Company, Long Binh Post Desk Sergeant, was contacted for assistance of one vehicle. SGT Cartee stated he would contact the Bien Hoa Desk Sergeant for assistance due to the Bien Hoa patrols being in the area of the air base.

Ambush At Gasoline Alley

0330 hours, SGT Keith D. Allen, 615th MP Company, Bien Hoa MP Desk Sergeant notified this office that two of their patrol vehicles had been ambushed on Route 1-A southeast of the RMK [Raymond International, Morrison-Knudsen Construction] Rock Quarry while conducting a Road Runner Patrol. Battalion Staff Duty Officer, CPT Weston and Operations Officer, 89th MP Group, CPT Francis Krahe, notified.

   0337 hours Situation Report, SP/4 Burke, A Company, Battalion Radio Operator advised this office that the wounded MPs were taken to the 93rd Evacuation Hospital. LT Bosse, 615th MP Company, CPT Weston, Battalion SDO, notified. CPT Weston departed for the hospital.

  0345 hours, SGT Keith D. Allen, 615th MP Company, Bien Hoa Desk Sergeant, advised this office that PFC William Leroy Sanders was dead on arrival, PFC Harold L. Newcomb, Jr. was treated for shrapnel wounds of the face and admitted, SP/4 L. D. Humbarger was treated for a wound of the right thigh and admitted, PFC William M. Halt was treated for a minor wound of the

arm and released. Two other members of the patrols, CPL William B. Pratt and Hendrick were not injured in the fire-fight.

0510 hours, MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations, contacted CPT Francis Krahe, Operations, 89th MP Group, in reference to sending out the Tay Ninh Convoy escort. The convoy escort was released by LTC Yarbough, Deputy Group Commander, 89th MP Group. Convoy escort departed for Tay Ninh, LT Anderson, OIC and SGT Mixon, NCOIC, Company C, 9 gun jeeps and 27 MPs utilized.

0530 hours, SP/4 Bushfield, CQ of the 89th MP Group was notified of the POW and Guard count, 62 POW’s, and 30 Guards.

0545 hours, Timber Butter-22, [call sign] 90th Replacement Battalion Operation SHOTGUN escort was advised of the ambush on Route 1-A due to their proximity to the location when proceeding to Tan Son Nhut Air Base for the troop pickup.

0650 hours, SGT David E. Metzgar, B Company, Long Binh Post Perimeter Guard NCOIC arrived at this office and stated his tour of duty had been completed without incident.

0655 hours, C Company provided 1 gun jeep and 3 MPs to assist B Company in the Operation SHOTGUN troop escort from Tan Son Nhut Air Base to the 90th Replacement Battalion. 0700 hours, SDNCO Relieved

0700 hours, SSG Cecil E. Clark, C Company, the SDNCO was relieved by SFC Clarence L. Broome, HHD, Operations.

0705 hours, MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations officer advised this office that he had released the Battalion Reaction Force to return to their units.

0900 hours, SGT Gullock, B Company, NCOIC, Hospital Guards, advised this office that one POW had been moved from Ward #7, 24th Evacuation Hospital to Ward #1, 50th Medical Company, POW count remains at 62.

0905 hours, SP/4 Martinez, 561st Ambulance Company, requested an Operation RIFLE escort for medical evacuation patients from the 24th Evacuation Hospital to Tan Son Nhut Air base at 1330 hours, (1:30 PM), this date. SP/4 Kenneth P. Laux, C Company notified

0930 hours, MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations Officer, advised this office that at approximately 0745 hours (7:45 AM), SP/4 Ronald Tobe, 615th MP Company, Patrol #15, picked up several propaganda leaflets and one Viet Cong flag approximately 75 yards off Highway 1-A, at Highway 1-A and Gasoline Alley. Items were turned over to CPT Weston. CPT Thomas, Operations Officer, 89th MP Group notified.

0950 hours, CPT Thomas Schooley, C Company, flying air cover for the Tay Ninh Convoy to Cu Chi arrived at this office and rendered the following report:

   (1) Roadrunner convoy OIC reported to control element (CPT Schooley) that one round of small arms fire was received at approximately 0750 hours (7:50 AM), in the vicinity of Check Point D, Grid Coordinates [map location] XT675100 on Highway 1. Propaganda leaflets were also located along the side of the road and samples were picked up by MP personnel. There were no injuries and no vehicles were hit. Convoy scout elements could detect no activity along the sides of the highway and the convoy proceeded to Cu Chi without further incident. Debriefed by MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations, MAJ Carl C. Keese, Battalion XO advised.

1100 hours, SFC Don S. Gilray, B Company Interior Guard, advised this office that he had checked the Long Binh Post MP Desk, patrols, gates, and hospital guards, all were secure.

1120 hours, PFC McCullem, 90th Replacement Battalion, requested an Operation SHOTGUN escort from the 90th to Tan Son Nhut Air Base at 1215 hours, (12:15 PM). SGT Jesse R. Towell, B Company notified.

1230 hours, SP/4 Roland B. Gray, B Company returned to this office from the 90th Replacement Battalion Operation SHOTGUN escort, and stated the escorts requested on 11 May 1967 from the 90th to Bien Hoa Air Base and return, and the 90th and Tan Son Nhut Air Base and return had been completed at 1100 hours, (11:00 AM), without incidents.

1425 hours, 2:45 PM, 1LT Nicholas F. Adams, A Company, Officer In Charge, of the Tan An Escort reported that he had completed the escort without incident.

1430 hours, SGT James L. Gillock, B Company, NCOIC of the POW Hospital Guard advised this office that he had completed his tour of duty without any incidents. SGT Gillick relieved by SP/4 David R. Hill as NCOIC. POW count remains the same at 62. SGT Gillock debriefed by MSG Dupree, Battalion Operations.

1530 hours, SGT Ronald G. Ratliff, A Company, advised this office that he had picked up POWs Nhuyen Van Teo, Ho Van Ngoan, Tham Minh Hung, Tran Van Vinh, Pham Van Hoang, Tran Van Ngo, and Vo Van Chau from the 25th Infantry Division at Cu Chi as per request dated 11 May 1967, and delivered them at 1400 hours (2:00 PM), to the III Corps enclosure without any incidents. Route 1A and 1, two gun jeeps, one 3/4 ton truck and eight MPs were utilized.

1550 hours, SGT Don S. Gilray, B Company Interior Guard, advised this office that he had checked the Long Binh Post MP desk, patrols, gate, and POW Hospital Guards, and all were secure.

1555 hours, SP/4 Errol J. Reddick, A Company advised this office that he was informed upon arrival at the 199th Light Infantry Brigade at Binh Chanh per POW escort request 11 May 1967, that POW Tran Van On had been shipped on the 11th of May 1967. SP/4 Reddick was unable to find out where the POW had been shipped to or what unit escorted him.

1630 hours, SFC Clarence L. Broome [HQ Detachment] assumed duty as the Battalion Staff Duty Noncommissioned Officer, was briefed by CPT Leon C. Matassarin, Assistant Battalion Operations Officer, and posted.

   SGT Beavers, C Company, completed the Operation RIFLE escort from the 24th Evacuation Hospital to Tan Son Nhut Air Base without incident.

1745 hours, SGT Maurice Irish, A Company, The NCOIC of the Perimeter Guard Detail arrived at this office and stated all the guards were present and ready for inspection. CPT Thomas Schooley, C Company, SDO, notified.

1800 hours, LT Anderson, C Company, OIC, Tay Ninh Convoy arrived at this office and stated the escort had been completed. LT Anderson stated the only incident was the one reported by CPT Thomas Schooley at approximately 0950 hours (9:50 AM), reference Spot Report 67-7, one round of small arms fire was received.

   SP/4 Randall E. Shover, B Company, reported that the Operation RIFLE escort from the 90th Replacement Battalion to Tan San Nhut Air Base had been completed without incident at 1800 hours, (6:00 PM).

1830 hours, SSG Paul F. Roach, C Company assumed duty as SDNCO, was briefed by SFC Clarence L. Broome, Battalion Operations NCO and posted.

1840 hours, the Battalion radio operator notified this office that the phone between Bunker #1 and Bunker #2 was out of order. SSG Overcash, Battalion Communications notified.

1930 hours, LT McCurgy, 534th Transportation Company reported to this office in person and asked to talk with the three MPs who were in vehicle C-7 and involved in the drug incident on the Tay Ninh Convoy.

   He stated that he had found a bag of what appeared to be dope in the possession of one of his drivers upon returning to his unit from Tay Ninh and that the driver informed him he had made an attempt to give it to the MPs at Cu Chi as the Convoy was moving out from Cu Chi for Tay Ninh but they did not have time to take it.

   Contacted C Company and was advised that SP/4 Roger D. Bowman, SP/4 Charles P. Knowles, and PFC Reynolds were the persons in vehicle C-7. All three arrived at this office and verified the statement that as the convoy was moving out of Cu Chi one driver had a plastic bag and stated he had got it from a Vietnamese boy. Due to the convoy being on the move the MPs continued on to Tay Ninh where they advised LT Anderson by radio of the incident. LT McCurgy confiscated the package and has it in his possession.

1950 hours, SGT Nishomoto, 561st Ambulance Company requested an Operation RIFLE escort for medical evacuation patients from the 93rd Evacuation Hospital to Bien Hoa Air Base at 0630 hours (6:30 AM), 13 May 1967.

2120 hours, SSG Overcash, Battalion Communications notified this office that the phone lines between bunker #1 and #2 had been checked and were in working order.

2220 hours, CPT Wollering, 179th MP Detachment, Bien Hoa requested that two patrols from the 615th MP Company be furnished armored vehicles to assist in patrolling along the south perimeter road of Bien Hoa Air Base and the Bien Hoa area. MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations notified. Vehicles obtained from B and C Companies.

2230 hours, SGT Donn S. Gilray, B Company Interior Guard, advised this office that he checked the hospital guards, Long Binh Post MP Desk, and Gate #2 [Main Gate], and all were secure.

2350 hours, SFC Ingram, 615th MP Company Bien Hoa Detachment advised this office that he inspected the Bien Hoa patrols and all were in order.

2400 hours Daily Log Closed.

13 May

0045 hours, SGT Hansen, 89th MP Group, Sergeant of The Guard, advised this office by phone that LT Matinelli, Commanding Officer of the 52nd Infantry Company, Officer of The Day, and himself (Hansen) had found a guard from 615th MP Company asleep on his post. The guard was relieved of duty and replaced by another guard from the 615th.

0130 hours, SP/4 Randall E. Shover, B Company, departed with one Operation SHOTGUN escort team, for the 90th Replacement Battalion for escort to Bien Hoa Air Base.

0245 hours, SGT Keith D. Allen, Desk Sergeant at Bien Hoa Provost Marshals Office, notified this office by phone that at approximately 0120 hours (1:20 AM), this date a guard on a security post reported he had seen a couple of men walking towards the fence line of his post. He attempted to halt same but they continued toward his post so he fired a round and they ran.

   Then at 0145 hours, the National Police Captain reported to the desk and said that a man had been shot and was in the hospital. A further check revealed that a 12 year old boy had been shot in the stomach by what appeared to be an M-16 round. The guard fired an M-14 round. Spot report submitted to 89th MP Group by 179th MP Detachment, CPT Thomas Schooley, [C Company] Staff Duty Officer, Major Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations Officer, and CPT Leon C. Matassarin Assistant Operations officer notified at 0730 hours (7:30 PM).

0400 hours, 1LT Kenneth G. Orth, B Company and SGT Roland A. Bellerose, C Company, departed for convoy escort to Tay Ninh. Nine gun jeeps and 27 MPs were utilized.

0430 hours, SSG Paul F. Roach, C Company, Staff Duty Noncommissioned Officer, was relieved by SFC Clarence L. Broome, Battalion Operations.

0445 hours, SGT J. T. Cartee, B Company, NCOIC of the Hospital Guard, advised this office that the POW report remained as 62 POWs and 30 MP Guards.

0515 hours, LT Bosse, 615th MP Company Bien Hoa Detachment, advised this office that he checked the Bien Hoa MP Desk and Highway 1-A patrols, all were secure.

0530 hours, the POW and Guard report was furnished to SGT O’Rouke, 89th MP Group, 62 POWs and 30 MP Guards.

0610 hours, SGT J. T. Cartee, NCOIC of the Hospital Guard advised this office that his tour of duty had been completed without incident. Debriefed by SGT James L. Gillock, B Company.

0700 hours, SGT Maurice Irish, A Company, NCOIC of the Long Binh Post Perimeter Guard, arrived at this office and stated his tour of duty had been completed without incident.

0720 hours, MSG Nunn, Operations, 89th MP Group, advised this office that there was a plane standing by at II Field Forces (IIFF) for convoy air cover to Cu Chi. He stated that he had just been notified that the plane was available. CPT Leon C. Matassarin [HQ Detachment] notified and the plane canceled due to the convoy being to far ahead at this time.

0805 hours, CPT Weston, 615th MP Company, advised this office that the shower was out of water. MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations, and CPT Robert Folster, Battalion Supply, notified.

0815 hours, SSG Gilchrest, IIFF, notified this office to pick up POW Tran Van On from the 199th Light Infantry Brigade at Binh Chan and take him to the cage on 15 May. He stated that on 12 May 67 the NCOIC of the POW compound at the 199LIB was absent and the person in charge at that time did not know that POW, Tran Van On was ready for transfer.

0910 hours, SGT Nishomoto, 561st Ambulance Company, requested an Operation RIFLE escort for medical evacuation patients from the 24th Evacuation Hospital to Tan Son Nhut Air Base at 1330 hours (1:30 PM). SP/4 Van Elswick, C Company, notified.

0925 hours, CPT Thomas, Operations, 89th MP Group, requested two MPs by name, rank, serial number and unit to go to Da Nang by helicopter to pick up one Viet Cong prisoner and return him to the CMIC [Central Military Intelligence Command] in Saigon. SSG Ilmer, A Company notified. Names of personnel given to CPT Thomas were, SP/4 Feehan and SP/4 Gary C. Watts.

1050 hours, SGT Watroun, Operations, 64th Quartermaster Battalion, contacted this office by phone and requested an escort for some fire fighting equipment from Gate #2 Long Binh Post to Tan San Nhut Air Base. He was informed to contact Bien Hoa Provost Marshals Office.

1130 hours, SFC Donn S. Gilray, B Company, was briefed on Duties as SDNCO by MSG Dupree [HQ Detachment].

1215 hours, SFC Ingram, 615th MP Company, advised this office that their shower was out of water. Battalion water truck driver notified.

1328 hours, SGT Nishomoto, 561st Ambulance Company, requested an Operation RIFLE escort for medical evacuation patients from the 24th Evacuation Hospital to Tan Son Nhut Air Base at 1530 hours (3:30 PM). SP/4 Kenneth P. Laux, C Company notified.

1400 hours, SFC Donn S. Gilray [B Company], SDNCO, checked with the 615th MP Company and learned that their shower had water.

1405 hours, SP/4 Tritt, 18th MP Brigade, advised this office that their shower was out of water.

1415 hours, CPT Leon C. Matassarin, Operations, advised this office that he had inspected POW Ward #7, 24th Evacuation Hospital at 1130 hours (11:30 AM), there were no deficiencies.

1420 hours, SGT James L. Gillock, B Company, advised this office that he had completed his tour of duty as the Noncommissioned Officer In Charge, of the Hospital Guard, without incident. There was no change in the POW count status.

1430 hours, SGT Ronald G. Ratliff, A Company, returned to this office from the Tan An Convoy escort and stated the escort had been completed without incident.

1445 hours, MSG Nunn, Operations, 89th MP Group, advised this office that the aircraft for the Tay Ninh Convoy cover would have to be requested for 0645 hours (6:45 AM), instead of 0615 hours (6:15 AM), due to the lack of landing lights on the airfield.

1500 hours, MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Battalion Operations, advised this office that CPT Thomas, Operations, 89th MP Group, notified this office that the aircraft for POW escort from Da Nang to CMIC was not available. 1SG Julius E. Givens, A Company, notified.

1635 hours, MSG Nunn, Operations, 89th MP Group, advised this office that the aircraft for air cover of the Tay Ninh Convoy to Cu Chi was confirmed for 0645 hours (6:45 AM). MAJ Francis L. Brokaw, Operations and LTC Kenneth Weinstein, Battalion CO, notified.

1750 hours, SGT McKinney, C Company, Long Binh Post Perimeter Guard, NCOIC, advised this office that the guards were all present for inspection. CPT Ronald K. Riggs, A Company, SDO, notified.

1810 hours, 1LT Kenneth G. Orth, B Company, OIC, Tay Ninh Convoy escort, arrived at this office and stated the escort had been completed without incident except for one minor traffic accident, no injuries. 1700 hours, CPT John B. Doyle, HQ Detachment, SDO, inspected the Battalion area and reported the laundry tent was being torn by water caught in the pockets, and that the tent would need repairing.

1800 hours, PFC Braud, 90th Replacement Battalion, requested an Operation SHOTGUN escort from the 90th to Bien Hoa Air Base at 1850 hours (6:50 PM), this date. SP/4 Richard L. Singleton, CQ, B Company, notified.

1815 hours, CPT John B. Doyle [HQ Detachment], SDO, advised this office that during an interior inspection he discovered the generator at the 89th MP Group is causing carbon monoxide fumes and recommended that Group install a taller exhaust stack on the generator.

1830 hours, CPT John B. Doyle [HQ Detachment], SDO, inspected and posted the Long Binh Post Perimeter Guards, all secure.

2135 hours, CPT Glossen, Operations Officer, 6th Transportation Battalion, advised this office that an MP patrol from the 615th MP Company Bien Hoa Detachment, vehicle X-35, had pointed a weapon at one of his vehicles on Highway 1-A at approximately 1930 hours (7:30 PM). CPT John B. Doyle, SDO and CPT Joseph Weston, III, CO of 615th notified and will investigate.

2140 hours, CPT Joseph Weston, III, CO of 615th MP Company, notified CPT John B. Doyle, Battalion SDO, that he interviewed the patrol involved and that they had informed him that they slowed their vehicle and checked their weapons because they were going into an area where small arms fire had been reported, and that they did not point any weapons at any one or any vehicles. CPT Clossen, 6th Transportation Battalion notified.

2145 hours, SP/4 Kenneth L. Surber, B Company, Xuan Loc Detachment advised this office that the detachment needed 1 low ball joint for a jeep, 1 jeep distributor and a mechanic as soon as possible. SP/4 James B. Churpurdy, CQ, B Company, notified.

2305 hours, PFC Borud, 90th Replacement Battalion requested an Operation SHOTGUN escort from the 90th to Bien Hoa Air Base at 0105 hours (1:05 AM), 15 May 1967. SP/4 James B. Chupurdy, CQ, B Company notified.

     The 18th Brigade cantonment on Long Binh Post was inspected by LG Bruce Palmer, Jr., Commanding Officer, USARV, who commended the commanders and troops of HQ & HQ Detachment 89th MP Group, 95th MP Battalion, 720th MP Battalion, and 91st MP Detachment, for the general appearance of their facilities and personnel, especially every person he had contact with who contributed to his impression given the short notice provided before his visit.

Operation JUNCTION CITY
     BG Frank H. Linnel, Commander 199th Light Infantry Brigade, issued a Letter of Commendation to the 89th MP Group for the “outstanding assistance rendered by the 720th MP Battalion during the Junction City operations. The excellent traffic control measure and convoy escorts provided by this unit contributed greatly to the success of the Brigade’s mission. As a part of Task Force Oregon we continue to receive direct support from military police elements of your Command and I am certain that as in the past we will be served professionally and with dedication.”
