4 February, Sunday, 2000 hours [8:00 PM] 1LT Frank M. Robbins returned to Kyong Ju with transportation to move the remaining Company personnel to Chung Ju. 5 February, Monday, 0530 hours [5:30 AM] The remainder of the Company personnel and assets consisting of the supply, orderly room, and most of the motor pool broke camp after policing the area. They departed Kyong Ju on their one-hundred sixty-eight mile trip to Cung Ju while a light snow was falling. The weather was extremely cold and there were many hardships along the way. The convoy suffered a total of seven flat tires, most on the large 6x6 [deuce and a half] trucks.
7 February, Wednesday The togetherness didn't last long when the Company was divided once again, the 2nd Platoon was detached to the Won Ju Road to control traffic through two defiles. One defile was approximately one mile long and the other, near Wonju was three miles long. The latter defile was very narrow and the MP’s had to be on constant alert to keep the traffic flowing and reporting road obstructions. The remainder of the Company was assigned to directing traffic through Chung Ju on the Main Supply Route, two bridges across the Han River, and at the C-47 and L-5 Air Fields. SGT Rice departed the Company for an R&R in Tokyo, Japan.
14 February, Wednesday The two squads from the 2nd Platoon sent to the Wonju Road defiles, returned to the Company. 15 February, Thursday The Company received their first replacement in months, Victor J. Salvo, a cook. CPL La Fontaine departed the Company for an R&R in Tokyo, Japan. With the manpower shortage the Company was only scheduling one man on R&R at a time, but it has improved the overall morale. 17 February, Saturday CPT Van Buskirk instituted a supernumerary system at inspection period to going on duty and it is turning out excellent. The men are really bucking to make Orderly which can get them 24 hours off duty time.
18 February, Sunday SGT Golden and nine enlisted men were sent to Chupori with the forty-seven Chinese POW’s, delivering them to the Chechon Stockade. The Company received its second replacement, PFC Howell, transferred from the 772nd MP Battalion. 19 February, Monday The Company was ordered to receive vaccinations. A Jeep Patrol was assigned to work south of Green Diamond as far as the pass, a run of twenty-two miles. This was to observe road conditions and keep traffic moving. SGT Medhurst, from the mess was transferred to Headquarters, X Corps. 23 February, Friday Heavy snow followed by heavy rainfall washed away the bridge across the Hahn River, causing traffic to be disrupted for several days. Three of the Company patrols were now stranded on the far side of the river due to the high water and swift current. The washout necessitated the assignment of five extra enlisted men on the bridge approach. 24 February, Saturday A combined raid to confiscate all U.S. property in the Korean houses in Chung Ju was conducted with the 88th MP Company. 25 February, Sunday 1LT Frank M. Robbins and his detachment of thirty-four men returned to the Company from the Chechon and Chupori check point details. 1LT Charles H. Avent was transferred to the 519th MP Battalion. The three jeep patrols stranded due to the Hahn Bridge collapse finally made it back to the Company. 26 February, Monday Orders were received from X Corps Command Post to initiate a four hour per day training program. All the training programs pertain to military police work. A chart was started to track the results and the number of men receiving the training. The scheduling was strained do the the numerous and varied Company commitments. 28 February, Wednesday A total of six-hundred and fifty-five meals have been served to stragglers and transients from the Company mess. The volume was handled with the regular mess crew and includes after hours sandwiches and coffee, served to travelers. |
