The Coke Can Incident Our commanding officer had us do a clean up of the Company area after he saw some cigarette butts on the ground. Everyone was upset for being treated like new recruits. A couple of days later, there was an empty Coke can on the grounds outside the CO’s office window. Someone walked by and kicked it instead of picking it up, the rest is history. The Commanding Officer was Capt Robert E. Conner and 1st Sergeant Powell was Top. We were a little lax in keeping the company grounds clean and the CO wanted to change that. He not only reinforced the clean up of the grounds and created the Coke Can challenge but he also instilled a more disciplined way of carrying out all of our responsibilities. He created a campaign for improved awareness of the Company assets and used the phrase "You Gotta Care" which was placed on top of |

3 October C and A Company were jointly tasked with the responsibility of a critical supply run, the first Long Binh to Cam Ranh Bay Convoy since 1968. In 1968 the convoy run was terminated due to the staggering losses of men and vehicles resulting from enemy action along the route. The 600 mile long six day trip was a joint effort with the 4th Transportation Command. The vehicles passed through Xuan Loc up into the mountains near Bao Loc and Dalat, out of Military Region III, into Military Region II. |
