TAOR  0130 hours,.SP/4 Hayes reported that a boat containing 11 personnel from A Company sank just south of the Dong Nai River Bridge, Grid Coordinates [map location] YT017046.

It was a windless night and the river was relatively calm as they proceeded out into the darkness and headed towards the north bank. As the overloaded boat slowed after coming off plane, the wake of water moved from the stern to the bow, and the forward motion of the boat caused the bow to dip beneath wake quickly swamping it.

The four-man crew and seven-member ambush team who were loaded down with full gear, went into the river. PFC Duane Elwood Carter age 20, the boat radio operator, was sitting in the stern under the heavy canvas Bimini-top when he disappeared from view.

SP/4’s Robert "Twiggie" Henslee a crewmember, and John H. Stuckey, Jr. an ambush team member, managed to keep themselves and PFC Rcalde C. "Tiny" Stewart, a big man and non-swimming crewmember, above water until they were rescued.

.

The other boat crewmember (unidentified), and all of the other ambush team members, SSG Thomas T. Nededog, SP/4’s Steven W. Senkovich, George Gillespie, Louis Boyatt, PFC Balenger R. "Skip" Brown and the teams PF interpreter, were also able to stay afloat until another boat arrived to assist them.

An immediate search of the river for PFC Carter proved fruitless, and his body wasn't recovered until two days later when it was discovered by a patrol of ARVN Marines. He was one of twenty-three American servicemen to die that day in Vietnam. It was rumored he could not swim, and, even if he could, they believed he became tangled up in the Bimini Top when the boat went under.

Reflection  “We tragically lost PFC Carter when the boat sank in the Dong Nai River.

I was the ambush squad radioman, and Carter was the boat crew radioman. It took me awhile to get the PRC-25 radio off my back before I surfaced, I suspect Carter got caught in the poncho shelter half that I think the boat crew had rigged in rear of boat as a sun cover where he sat with the radio.

After surfacing we treaded water and accounted for each other. SSG Nededog quickly determined we were missing someone, and thinking it might be his PRC-25 operator, called for his radioman. I answered, and we realized that Carter was missing.

The boat that had been ahead of us returned, and joined us in the search. While looking for Carter we continued to tread-water and took care of each other. We also watched for other movement in the water. Eventually the second boat returned from its search and pulled several of us from the river. The rest of us grabbed the side of the now over loaded second boat. The crew safely delivered us to a barge on the other side of the river.

Years later I wrote a poem about Carter titled "Radio Man.” I think of Carter a lot, and I know Steve and Twiggie do too. There is something from all of us still in that river.”  SP/4 Balenger R. "Skip" Brown, A Company, 720th MP Battalion.

The ambush team hunkered down at the base of the Highway QL-15 berm preparing to move to their south and engage the VC who had no idea they were there. They waited for the vehicle to pass so its headlights wouldn't expose their position. The vehicle turned out to be a jeep from the 9th Infantry Division. The men in the gun jeep must have spotted movement because they opened fire as they passed by the ambush teams location, then continued down the highway.

The rounds from the jeep struck SGT Walter in the chest at least three times. They passed through the M-16 magazines that were hung on bandoleers across his chest. SGT Walter was transported to the 24th Evacuation Hospital but died from the wounds before he arrived. SGT Walter had thirty days in-country when he died.
